Fennel's painting is inspired by many years observing nature through her work as a biologist and avid outdoorswoman. She uses a unique combination of ink, salt, and water to create abstract images. This novel medium relates to her background in science where the chemistry of elements combine to create something new. The interaction of ink and salt with water and paper yields an enigmatic image that is more indicative of a code or language of nature than its finished product. This transformation of elements is a result of the creative process in action, sometimes formed from a concept given to her by a client but primarily created without a preconceived idea or vision. Fennel articulates forms as images emerge... but it is the viewer that transforms these images into the patterns and forms that come from their own life experience. This transformation by the viewer is what intrigues her most about her work.
