Current Gallery: unsungheroes ( piece)
When Jesse Gardner began planning the Unsung Heroes portrait series in the late 1980's, firefighters like most public servants, blended into the background. In the pre-911 era, their lives and personal stories did not merit much attention. The men and women who serve in the Fire Department go about their jobs without fanfare or desire for personal glory. It is this stoic attitude and sense of humility that initially attracted Gardner to feature them in a large scale portrait series. He wanted to bring their personal stories, struggles, and achievements to a wider audience.
