Current Gallery: abstractions ( piece)
-Bio Heather Campbell is a photographic artist who explores abstract imagery with the interrelationship of color. She has obtained a bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis in Photography at the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center in the fall of 2005. She was selected one out of five students for an exhibition at the Ironton Studios and Gallery, in Denver Colorado in correlation with the Society for Photographic Education Regional Conference in October of 2004. However, currently Heather is working as a freelance photographer and is a contract printer for a local photographer. Her goal for the future is to attend graduate school to obtain her Master of Fine Arts. Her passion is to teach other students photography. Currently Heather is creating a body of work titled White Light that concentrates on the subconscious physical and emotional responses through the examination of color. -Artist Statement “Colors appear connected predominantly in space. Therefore, as constellations they can be seen in any direction and at any speed. And as they remain, we can return to them repeatedly and in many different ways.” -Interaction of color, Josef Albers “Conversely, there have been many instances when a artist’s inner mood and dream have been so powerful that his chosen models become vehicles to carry his visions. In this event they lose their natural appearance, for the artist is not concerned with the visual truth. In such images it is man who emerges supreme, and it is hard to find the object.” -Art and the Creative Consciousness, Graham Collier White light is all colors of the spectrum visible to the human eye. As light travels from an object to the eye, color cones in the retina transform white light into a range of colors. This color information stimulates the mind on a physical and emotional level. Color acts upon our body as well in our minds. Having the ability to see in color allows us to distinguish form, size, movement and depth. Physiological changes take place when we are exposed to certain colors. A study conducted by Dr. Alexander Schauss, PH.D., director of the American Institute for Biological research in Tacoma, Washington was the first to report the suppression of angry, antagonistic, and anxiety ridden behavior among prisoners: “Even if a person tries to be angry or aggressive in the presence of pink, he can’t. The heart muscles cannot race fast enough. It’s a tranquilizing color that saps your energy. Even the color-blind are tranquilized by pink rooms.” In another study the effecting color of learning has been demonstrated over and over again. The Department of Education in Connecticut (1961), in a series of studies conducted in the school setting, found that in schools where color changes were made, students showed pride in their school and a decrease in behavior problems, including vandalism. They wondered whether it was cheaper to paint the schools every year than to replace broken windows. These are clear examples of how color can affect us on a physical level. Red raises blood pressure, orange increases appetite, while blue calms the mind. Through the use of abstract imagery and deliberate color combinations my intention is to create a body of work that elicits a subtle and subconscious physical and emotional response in the viewer. In these abstractions meaning cannot be pinned down. With no recognizable objects to consider, the viewer is forced to examine what lies below the surface of vibrating color. Over time a visual truth bubbles to the surface that is unique to each individual viewer.
