Current Gallery: paintingsbyhaitianchildren02 ( piece)
The original paintings in this gallery are 12x16 acrylic on canvas. One month after losing their home, school and every possession to Haiti’s earthquake, 100 children from the Maranatha School and Orphanage came together and created 209 masterpieces of art. The children had been sleeping outside, on the streets or under tents since the earthquake. The project was the initiative of Rogue Space | Chelsea Gallery owner and documentary filmmaker Kevin O’Hanlon. O’Hanlon collaborated with artist Richard Laurent and the Life For The World team to bring canvasses and painting supplies to Maranatha which has been the home and school to over 100 children since 2002. The concept was to bring blank canvasses and painting supplies to the orphanage and help them create their very first paintings. We exhibited the paintings at Rogue Space | Chelsea and with the proceeds were largely able to restore the orphanage to it’s original working condition. The project was so successful we are now continuing to support the children onto the next level. June 18th - 24th we returned to Haiti and painted many more amazing images for which we are planning an opening night exhibition/benefit aution. On this trip we also pinpointed a few children who are clearly very talented and hope to have them visit our gallery for solo or group shows. The next thing we would like to create is a sustainable community where they can complete their studies and where they can create their own future. We are delighted that all this progress has been made possible by the children themselves. This was not an almsgiving project, but a creatively enabling one and we are excited to see what that original thought will bring into being for the children of Maranatha. "This was one of those mutually abundant situations. We got to experience the mindset of these amazing children at a pivotal moment in their lives, while bringing so much joy to kids who had never held a paintbrush or seen a blank canvass before. The project empowered them, affirmed their artistic abilities and set them on a creative path to their own solution. They are Haiti’s future, the generation who will rebuild." The money generated by the sale of each painting of this gallery goes 100% to the children of Maranatha.
